Scientists have been attempting to replicate nuclear fusion on Earth for many years. The reason behind this is that it could provide a clean energy source for humans, potentially reducing carbon emissions and greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. These possibilities have led to the concept of creating an artificial sun.

What exactly do we mean by an “artificial sun”? Are people attempting to create massive balls of gas capable of heating planets far away from the center of our solar system? Definitely not, at least not yet. The artificial suns being developed today are actually nuclear fusion reactors.

In 2017, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) announced the creation of such a device called Synlight. This reactor can reach temperatures of 5432 °F (3000 °C). Its creators even claim that it can produce 10,000 times more light than what naturally reaches Earth from the Sun.

Synlight is not the only one. Another artificial sun, named the HL-2M Tokamak, became operational in China in 2020. This reactor utilizes a magnetic field and can reach temperatures of 270 million °F (150 million °C), making it ten times hotter than our Sun. Another reactor is expected to be completed in France by 2025.

Many people are optimistic about the potential of this technology for the future of energy. As concerns about climate change and rising sea levels grow worldwide, nuclear fusion is seen as a more sustainable energy source.

How long can Earth rely on the heat and energy from the Sun? Most scientists believe it will last for approximately five billion more years. After that, the hydrogen that fuels the Sun’s nuclear fusion will deplete, causing the Sun to expand and become a red giant. Will humans have created a replacement for the actual Sun by then? We cannot predict the future, but today’s artificial suns could be a promising indication.
