Those who contemplate the existence of parallel universes suggest that our universe may simply be one branch on a tree of universes, all coexisting simultaneously but in different states of time, with different pasts and different futures.

This idea may sound like something out of science fiction books and movies, right? There have certainly been numerous works of fiction over the years that have challenged the minds of readers and viewers everywhere. But is the notion of a parallel universe purely a product of imagination?

The concept of parallel universes actually dates back to 1954, when Hugh Everett III, a student at Princeton University, proposed the bold idea that parallel universes, identical to and connected with our own universe, exist. These parallel universes branch off from ours, and our universe itself branches off from others.

In these parallel universes, historical events such as world wars might have had different outcomes. Certain species, like dinosaurs, might have thrived in specific parallel universes. In fact, humans themselves might have become extinct in certain parallel universes!

Does all of this sound a bit far-fetched to you? Why would a young scientist put forth such a radical idea? Everett’s Many-Worlds Theory, as it came to be known, was his attempt to provide answers to some unanswered questions raised by the results of experiments conducted in the emerging field of quantum physics.

Quantum physics involves the study of matter on the quantum level, which is the smallest level that scientists have been able to detect thus far. Quantum matter, which exists at the subatomic level, sometimes appears to behave unpredictably, leading scientists to believe that there may be other scientific laws at play that we have yet to discover.

For instance, scientists studying quantum matter soon realized that quantum particles, such as photons, can exhibit different forms in an arbitrary manner. Observing photons, scientists noted that they sometimes act like particles while other times they behave like waves. It’s as if you were a solid human being one minute and a gas the next! This phenomenon is known as the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

Physicist Werner Heisenberg proposed that our observation of quantum matter actually influences its behavior. Another physicist, Neils Bohr, agreed with this idea. Bohr believed that quantum particles exist in all possible states simultaneously. When we observe them, we impact their behavior and force them to choose one state at that particular moment in time.

Everett’s Many-Worlds Theory offers an alternative perspective to Bohr’s understanding of quantum matter. According to Everett, observing quantum matter results in an actual splitting of the universe instead of a choice between one state and another. The universe literally duplicates itself, dividing into multiple parallel universes, each representing a possible state of the quantum matter.

The theory proposed by Everett, known as the Many-Worlds Theory, has unsettled some scientists due to its implications. According to this theory, if you have ever been in a situation where one possible outcome was death, there is another universe where you actually died. Another reason why some scientists are skeptical of Everett’s theory is that it contradicts our basic understanding of time.

For many years, Everett’s theory was considered unlikely, but recently scientists have started to show interest in it again. Some scientists have conducted thought experiments that suggest Everett’s theory could be theoretically possible.

Interestingly, Everett’s theory is not the only alternative theory attempting to explain quantum mechanics. Another theory, called String Theory, proposes the existence of particles smaller than quantum matter and suggests the possibility of parallel universes.
