However, there are times when you may not be able to see the forest because it’s hidden by clouds. When does this happen? When you find yourself in a cloud forest, of course!

Also known as montane rainforests, cloud forests are usually characterized by their constant immersion in a thick layer of mist and clouds. They are rare because the unique conditions that create cloud forests are typically found only in tropical areas with tall mountains.

For instance, most cloud forests can be found on the slopes of mountains at elevations between 3,000-10,000 feet in tropical regions. Some of the places where you can find cloud forests include Central America, southern Mexico, South America, Africa, Madagascar, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and the Caribbean.

How do these distinctive forests come into existence? In tropical regions with abundant rainfall and nearby water sources, evaporating water continuously generates masses of warm air. Winds transport these warm air masses towards mountains, where they are naturally forced upwards due to the natural slope of the land.

As the warm air masses rise higher and higher, they begin to cool. As the air cools, the water vapor condenses, forming clouds and mist. The forests that thrive in these unique conditions are often very different from the rainforests found at lower elevations.

For example, in a cloud forest, the trees are typically short and twisted. At higher elevations with strong winds and cooler temperatures, the trees in a cloud forest do not grow tall and straight like those in a regular rainforest.
