While exploring the Wonderopolis jungle, we stumbled upon an unexpected sight:
Monkey: En garde! It’s time I teach you a lesson. Choose your weapon.
Sloth: If you’re going to threaten me with a banana, then I’m going to defend myself with this cucumber.
Monkey: Very well. Let us begin!
What happened next can only be described as a chaotic flurry of arms, legs, fruits, and vegetables. Luckily, the monkey and the sloth were just playing. After their duel, they shared the remaining banana and cucumber, and we continued on our way.
Their jungle duel got us thinking about sword fighting. Some of our favorite movies, like The Princess Bride, the Lord of the Rings films, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series, feature thrilling swordplay adventures.
But do people still engage in sword fights… or do they? Although real sword fights are now limited to movies, swordplay has evolved into a sport known as fencing, which has a rich history and remains popular today.
Swords have existed for thousands of years. Even before the invention of modern weapons, swords were widely used and effective for self-defense. Interestingly, the term “fencing” comes from a Latin word meaning “to defend.”
Although swords have been around since prehistoric times, organized fencing as a sport didn’t emerge until the late 19th century. The French were the first to establish a basic set of equipment, rules, and conventions for the sport in the 1880s.
In 1896, fencing was featured as one of the original nine sports at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. It is also one of only four sports that have been included in every Olympic Games since 1896.
Fencing requires mental strength to develop a solid strategy for both attack and defense. It also demands various physical attributes, such as strength, agility, timing, balance, and coordination.
Fencers compete on a fencing strip called a piste, which is approximately six feet wide and 46 feet long. Depending on the event, they utilize one of three types of fencing swords: the epee, the foil, or the saber.
The specific rules and conventions differ for each type of sword, but the main objective is to score a touch on your opponent while successfully preventing them from touching you. Matches can be determined by time, number of touches, or a combination of both.
If you have ever witnessed a fencing match, you know that the action is intense. Opponents repeatedly lunge towards each other while their swords swiftly move through the air, attempting to strike or parry based on who has the advantage.
In the past, fencing judges had to evaluate matches based on their observations. However, in modern times, matches are scored electronically using advanced technology.
Fencers wear gear that contains conductive material. When the metal of a weapon touches the gear, a circuit is completed, and a successful touch is electronically registered. Previously, fencers were connected by long cords to enable this, but wireless versions are now available.
