The modern triathlon had its beginnings in Southern California, with the first Mission Bay Triathlon taking place on September 25, 1974, in San Diego. On that day, nearly 50 individuals competed in a race that included a 500-yard swim, a five-mile bike ride, and a six-mile run.

Triathlons gradually gained popularity as other locations began hosting their own events. However, things really took off in 1978 when three popular endurance events in Hawaii were combined to create the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon.

The first Ironman had 15 competitors, with only 12 finishing the race. The Ironman began being broadcasted by ABC’s Wide World of Sports in 1982, and by 2006, it attracted nearly 3,000 participants.

The triathlon achieved Olympic status in 1989, making it the fastest sport to do so. It made its Olympic debut at the Sydney Olympics in Australia in 2000. The Olympic triathlon consists of a 0.93-mile (1.5-kilometer) swim, a 24.8-mile (40-kilometer) bike ride, and a 6.2-mile (10-kilometer) run.

If you are not ready for an Olympic or Ironman triathlon, there is no need to worry. Triathlons come in various distances. For beginners, there are mini or “sprint” triathlons that include a half-mile swim, a 15-mile bike ride, and a three-mile run.

For example, aquathons combine swimming and running, while duathlons replace swimming with a run/bike/run race. In mountainous areas, races may include a combination of trail running, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing.
