What are the seven seas? They are the largest bodies of water on Earth. Currently, they include the Arctic, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans. Together, these seas form a vast ocean that covers 70 percent of our planet. Each of the seven seas possesses its own unique characteristics.
The North and South Pacific Oceans are encircled by a string of active volcanoes known as the Ring of Fire. The North Pacific is also home to the Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the ocean at a depth of 35,826 feet. Only three individuals have ever reached the Challenger Deep, while more people have visited the Moon!
In the South Pacific, you will encounter the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, which harbors over 1,500 species of fish and provides a habitat for six types of marine turtles. Unfortunately, the Great Barrier Reef is currently under threat and requires our protection from pollution and climate change.
Did you know that the Earth’s largest mountain range is located underwater? It’s true! It is called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This range begins in Iceland, stretches through the North and South Atlantic Oceans, and ends near Antarctica. The Atlantic Ocean is also teeming with marine life, including blue whales, dolphins, eels, octopuses, starfish, snails, and many other species.
If you are interested in observing whales, let’s head to the Indian Ocean. It is home to more humpback whales than any other ocean. You will also have the chance to encounter the coelacanth, a fish that scientists once believed to be extinct! The Indian Ocean is also significant for trade, as it facilitates the transportation of 17 million barrels of oil daily.
Far less trade occurs in the Southern Ocean. Situated off the coast of Antarctica, this sea is the habitat of emperor penguins, which you might be familiar with from the movie “Happy Feet.” Emperor penguins are also the largest penguins in the world. Unfortunately, the Southern Ocean is also home to whales, seals, and birds that prey on penguins.
On the opposite side of the globe, the Arctic Ocean surrounds the North Pole. Here, you will encounter the lion’s mane jellyfish and might even witness a polar bear fishing for dinner. Did you bring ice skates? We can glide across the Arctic ice pack, a large expanse of ice that covers a significant portion of the Arctic Ocean.
Enjoy your time skating while you can! The Arctic ice pack is shrinking by eight percent every decade due to climate change. This phenomenon negatively impacts the seven seas and other features. Additionally, greenhouse gases contribute to rising sea levels and increased acidity in the oceans.
What can we do to help? We can reduce our use of fossil fuels and prioritize recycling while avoiding littering. Currently, the seven seas contain various “garbage patches,” such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which pose a threat to wildlife habitats worldwide.
Scientists estimate that over 80 percent of the ocean remains unexplored. What wonders might await us there? Could we discover new species, land formations, or even potential medicines? If we fail to take action to preserve the seas, we may never find out!
