Are you a fan of movies? How about television shows? I bet you are! That’s why you might be cheering for Hollywood! After all, many of the movies and television shows you enjoy are produced there.

So where exactly is Hollywood? It is located to the west and northwest of downtown Los Angeles, California. This area has been the hub of movie stars and film studios for a long time. When people think of the heart of the American entertainment industry, they think of Hollywood.

Today, the American entertainment industry has expanded all over Southern California. It has even reached other parts of the country, like New York City. However, Hollywood still holds great significance in the industry. It is home to numerous movie studios and related businesses.

How did Hollywood get its name? The credit goes to H. J. Whitley. In the 1880s, he purchased a 480-acre ranch in the area. Whitley had a vision of building a magnificent city starting from that ranch land. He eventually earned the title of the “Father of Hollywood.”

Although American filmmaking did not originate in Hollywood, by 1920 it had become globally renowned as the heart of the U.S. film industry. In the following decades, television studios and music recording studios also found their place in Hollywood.

One of Hollywood’s most iconic landmarks is the world-famous Hollywood Sign. Situated on the south side of Mount Lee in Griffith Park, the sign spells out “HOLLYWOOD” in letters that are 45 feet tall and stretch over 350 feet wide.

The rugged and steep terrain in the area gives the sign its distinctive wavy appearance. Initially, the sign spelled out “HOLLYWOODLAND.” It was constructed in 1923 to promote a new housing development with the same name.

The original sign was adorned with over 4,000 light bulbs. It was not intended to last for more than a year or two. However, as Hollywood gained fame, the sign became famous as well. As a result, it was never taken down.

Over time, the sign suffered significant damage and deteriorated greatly. In 1949, the City of Los Angeles Parks Department took over the responsibility of maintaining the sign. The “LAND” portion of the sign and the light bulbs were removed.

In 1978, the entire sign was replaced with steel letters. Nine donors each contributed over $27,000 to fund the $250,000 restoration project. The new version of the sign was unveiled on November 14, 1978 — the 75th anniversary of Hollywood.

The sign underwent another update in 2013 when it turned 90 years old. It continues to attract millions of visitors each year. Have you ever been to Hollywood? Have you seen the famous sign? For many, it still represents the ultimate symbol of the American film industry!
