Moats filled with water were usually supplied by a nearby water source, such as a spring, lake, or river. Dams could be constructed to control the water level in the moat. While some elaborate moats may have had stone walls, most moats had simple earthen banks left over from when they were dug.
As you have probably seen in movies featuring castles, the medieval times when castles thrived were also violent times. There were many dangers to worry about. In fact, why do you think castles were built? Simple homes were too vulnerable to looting and pillaging. Castles, on the other hand, provided safety through strong walls and fortifications.

Castles without moats were susceptible to attacks from underneath, as invaders often found that the only way to catch the castle’s inhabitants off guard was to tunnel beneath the castle and attack from below. Moats, however, made it nearly impossible to tunnel under a castle.

However, moats often did contain eels and fish. Castle residents would stock moats with these creatures to use as a food source.
