Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was born on February 12. Despite his later achievements as a lawyer and politician, he started his life in a modest log cabin in rural Kentucky.
On February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in a small one-room log cabin on Sinking Spring Farm, situated on Nolin Creek around three miles south of Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the second child of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Abraham had an older sister named Sarah, who was two years old when he was born.
In 1811, the Lincoln family moved to Knob Creek Farm, located 10 miles away. They resided there from the time Abraham was two and a half years old until he was almost eight years old. It was during this time that he learned to speak and grew old enough to do small tasks like fetching water and gathering wood.
“My earliest memory is of the Knob Creek place,” Lincoln later recalled. He used to share a childhood story about helping his sister Sarah plant a garden. They planted pumpkin seeds and corn, but unfortunately, heavy rain the following night caused a flood that washed away their crops.
In Kentucky, Abraham and Sarah occasionally attended “subscription” schools, which only operated for a few months. Their parents had to pay a fee for their education since free schools were not available in Kentucky until the 1830s. They had to walk two miles from Knob Creek Farm to attend school!
As a young boy in Knob Creek, Lincoln enjoyed fishing in the nearby stream and picking berries in the hills. When he was seven years old, he shot a wild turkey, but he felt remorseful and never went hunting again.
Even as the President of the United States, Lincoln cherished his childhood memories at Knob Creek. He remembered the old family home, sitting by his mother’s side as she read the Bible, and the loss of his baby brother, who was born and died on the farm. It was also at Knob Creek where Abraham witnessed African-Americans being transported south along the old Cumberland Road to be sold as slaves.
