Have you ever been given a nickname? Sometimes nicknames are simply shortened versions of a person’s full name. Other times, people receive nicknames because of their special talents!

Recently, we discovered a person whose nickname was derived from her exceptional detective skills. Her actual name was Grace Humiston, but she was known as “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes.”

You have probably encountered the character Sherlock Holmes in books, movies, or TV shows. This fictional detective had an unparalleled ability to solve crimes! He worked alongside his assistant, Dr. Watson, and together they cracked cases that even the police couldn’t solve.

Was Mrs. Sherlock Holmes a character who married Sherlock Holmes? No, she was not the spouse of the fictional detective! Grace Humiston was a real individual. People nicknamed her “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes” due to her own impressive detective abilities.

Grace Humiston initially worked as a lawyer and owned The People’s Law Firm. Through her firm, she took on cases for working-class individuals in New York City. When her clients couldn’t afford it, Humiston often provided her services free of charge.

In 1906, Humiston ventured into detective work. The family of a missing man sought her help, and she took on the case. Humiston traced the man’s whereabouts to the deep South. There, she discovered camps where men were forced into slavery when they couldn’t repay their debts. Humiston realized that all the missing men had been reported as such in the northern states.

Disguised, Humiston infiltrated the camps to gather evidence. She returned to New York and reported her findings to the police. As a result, the police rescued the missing men and shut down the camps. Finally, these individuals were able to reunite with their families.

Shortly after, Grace Humiston became a Special Assistant United States Attorney, becoming the first woman in history to hold this position. In this role, she continued to uncover and dismantle forced labor camps throughout the United States.

Ten years later, people began referring to Grace Humiston as “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes.” In 1917, a young woman named Ruth Cruger vanished without a trace. She had taken her ice skates to be sharpened at a motorcycle shop and never returned home.

The police initially investigated the owner of the motorcycle shop, Alfredo Cocchi, but quickly ruled him out as a suspect. They informed the Cruger family that their daughter must have run away, although the family still harbored concerns that Ruth had been kidnapped.

It was at this point that the Cruger family sought the assistance of Grace Humiston. Humiston took on the case and began her investigation. She discovered that Ruth had visited the motorcycle shop on the day of her disappearance and learned that Alfredo Cocchi had fled to Italy. These clues raised Humiston’s suspicions, prompting her to reexamine Alfredo Cocchi.

The police had already searched Cocchi’s basement twice, finding nothing. However, with the assistance of Detective Julius Kron, Humiston conducted another search. This time, they discovered Ruth Cruger’s body buried deep beneath the basement floor.

And so, Grace Humiston earned the moniker “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes.” People all over celebrated her as an extraordinary investigator. During Humiston’s time, very few women became detectives, making her achievements even more remarkable. The New York Police Department even appointed her as an official detective.

However, while Mrs. Sherlock Holmes was establishing her reputation, she vanished from the public view. Grace Humiston continued to solve cases but received little attention from the public. Nowadays, most people find Mrs. Sherlock Holmes as enigmatic as the cases she once solved.
