How Can You Earn Money?

Are you a fan of bacon? Who isn’t, right? When we spot bacon on our breakfast plate, we get excited and can’t wait to indulge!

Occasionally, you might have heard the phrase “bring home the bacon.” Have you ever wondered what it means? It sounds like something you would want to hear your parents say when they come back from the grocery store.

However, “bring home the bacon” is actually a common expression used to mean making money. If you are “bringing home the bacon,” then you are earning money to support your family. It can also imply that you are not only making money but also being successful and making a lot of money.

So how did delicious strips of pork become associated with earning money? That is a question with multiple possible explanations. There are several theories about the origin of this phrase.

One popular story suggests that the phrase originated in the 1100s in the small town of Great Dunmow in Essex, England. According to local legend, the church in Great Dunmow would award a side of bacon (known as a “flitch”) to any man who could honestly claim that he had not argued with his wife for a year and a day. Such a man would “bring home the bacon” and be seen as a role model.

Others believe that the phrase originated in the 1500s at country fairs. One of the most popular competitions at these fairs involved catching a greased pig. Clearly, this was not an easy task. The prize for catching the pig was getting to keep it. So, if you won, you got to “bring home the bacon.”

These old tales may contain some truth, but other experts argue that the phrase is a modern American saying that dates back no earlier than the early 1900s. Bacon did not always refer to the strips of pork we think of today. In the past, bacon was a term used to describe all pork in general.

The word “bacon” itself comes from old German and French words for “back,” since the best cuts of pork come from the back and sides of the animal. Since the 1600s, “bacon” has been used as a slang term for one’s body. Because people often associate the body with one’s ability to work and earn money, it is believed that bacon eventually took on that connotation as well.

During that time, one way of earning money with one’s body was through the sport of boxing. It is from this context that the earliest recorded use of the phrase comes. On September 3, 1906, boxer Joe Gans fought Oliver Nelson for the world lightweight championship in Goldfield, Nevada.

According to the Reno Evening Gazette, Joe received a telegram from his mother before the fight. The telegram said: “Joe, the eyes of the world are on you. Everybody says you ought to win. Peter Jackson will tell me the news and you bring home the bacon.”

Joe Gans did win the fight and the prize money that came with the victory. He sent a telegram back to his mother, stating that he was indeed “bringing home the bacon.”

Mrs. Gans may have been repeating a phrase she had heard and used before, but hers was the first known usage. The phrase quickly became popular in the boxing world and soon spread to other sports.
