It’s overcast outside and the temperature is decreasing. Is there a possibility of snow? You verify the weather forecast and become excited. Snow is indeed expected!

While you complete your homework, have dinner, and then read on the couch, you keep glancing out the window in anticipation of seeing the first snowflakes. But there is still no sign of snow. Before you know it, it’s time to go to bed. After brushing your teeth, you take one last look, but the ground remains dry.

You fall asleep dreaming of snowstorms. Will you wake up to a snowy landscape outside your window? Will school be canceled for the day?

Snow days happen when weather conditions make it too dangerous for you and your fellow students to travel to school. However, snow is not the only factor that causes school closures. Any type of severe weather, from floods to tornadoes to hurricanes, can result in canceling school to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Some regions of the United States receive more snow than others. For instance, snow days are not very common in Florida. However, in Northern states, snow days may occur frequently.

Nevertheless, just because an area receives a lot of snow does not necessarily mean that snow days will be frequent. If people in an area accustomed to snowy conditions are able to navigate in the snow, then going to and from school might not be a big issue. On the other hand, when it snows in an area that rarely experiences snow, even a small amount can cause major traffic problems!

Most children generally enjoy snow days, and that is understandable. Who doesn’t love an unexpected day off? However, snow days can have consequences later in the year.

Many states require students to attend school for a certain number of days. If you have too many snow days, you may find yourself still in school at the beginning of what was supposed to be summer vacation.
