A lot of our Wonder Friends have gained knowledge about the U.S. president. You may be familiar with the process of electing the president. Perhaps you have read about the differences between the president’s role and that of a Prime Minister. Maybe you have even learned about the Cabinet. Today, we are going to explore the responsibilities of another important figure closely associated with the president. Who is that? The vice president, of course!
So, what exactly do vice presidents (VPs) do? The purpose of this office is to have someone prepared to take over if the president is unable to fulfill their duties. And many would argue that this remains the primary responsibility of the VP today! They must be ready to assume the role of president if necessary.
Does the vice president simply wait around for their turn to lead the nation? No, certainly not! They have two other specified functions as outlined in the Constitution. The first is to preside over the U.S. Senate. In this capacity, the VP casts the tie-breaking vote in the event of a split Senate. The second duty is to oversee the counting of electoral ballots during a presidential election and announce the winner.
Naturally, the VP often takes on numerous additional tasks. They work closely with the president, hire staff members, and maintain an office in the White House. Since 1974, the VP has resided at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Northwest Washington, DC.
How is the vice president selected? Prior to 1804, they were elected by receiving the second highest number of votes in the presidential race. Today, the VP is chosen as the president’s running mate. They participate in the same campaign and are elected together.
Of course, some vice presidents have gone on to become president themselves. This has occurred 14 times thus far. Four of these instances were a result of the president’s natural death. Another four were due to presidential assassination. One was the result of a presidential resignation. The others were elected to the office.
Many vice presidents are remembered for their achievements. For example, John Adams served as the country’s first VP. Three VPs have been recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize—Charles Dawes, Theodore Roosevelt, and Al Gore. In January 2021, Kamala Harris became the first woman to hold this office. She is also the first Black person and the first person of South Asian heritage to serve as VP.
However, not every VP is remembered favorably. Former Vice President John Breckenridge led troops against Washington, DC during the Civil War. Another VP, Aaron Burr, killed Alexander Hamilton.
The vice president plays a crucial role in the U.S. government. Of course, all three branches—executive, legislative, and judicial—collaborate to make decisions and pass laws. Each branch contributes to the governance of the nation.
