What Makes Boats Float?

Here at Wonderopolis, we love spending time in the water. Whether it’s paddling in canoes and kayaks or cruising on houseboats, being out on lakes and rivers is a fantastic way to enjoy nature. Sometimes, when it’s too cold outside, we have fun playing with toy boats in the bathtub.

Once, we decided to take our pet rock collection for a swim. To our disappointment, all the rocks sank to the bottom of the tub. We couldn’t understand why our toy battleship, which was much heavier, was able to float without any issues. And how do barges manage to carry so much cargo without sinking?

The science behind floating was first studied by an ancient Greek scientist named Archimedes. He discovered that when an object is placed in water, it pushes aside enough water to make space for itself. This phenomenon is known as displacement.

Have you ever experienced displacement? Of course, you have! Remember the last time you got into the bathtub and the water level rose? That’s displacement. When you got into the tub, the water had to move out of the way to accommodate you, causing the water level to increase.

When an object enters water, two forces come into play. There’s a downward force (gravity) determined by the object’s weight, and an upward force (buoyancy) determined by the weight of the water displaced by the object.

An object will float if the downward force (gravity) is less than the upward force (buoyancy). In simple terms, if an object weighs less than the amount of water it displaces, it will float.

This is why a rock sinks while a large boat floats. The rock is heavy, but it displaces only a small amount of water. Its weight is greater than the weight of the water it displaces, causing it to sink.

On the other hand, a large boat floats because, despite its weight, it displaces a significant amount of water that outweighs it. Additionally, boats are designed in a way that ensures they displace enough water to float easily.
