Trees can survive anywhere on Earth if there is sufficient water, heat, and air. They can be found on six out of the seven continents. The only continent without trees is Antarctica. Deserts and mountaintops are other locations where trees cannot thrive.
Trees are extremely vital for life on Earth. Their roots hold the soil in place and prevent erosion. Through photosynthesis, trees also purify the air by removing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen for humans to breathe. Trees also serve as homes for many animals, including birds, squirrels, and insects. They provide shade and contribute to cooling the planet.
Humans also derive numerous resources from trees. Fruits, such as apples, oranges, and avocados, grow on trees. People use wood from trees to construct homes, produce paper, and create furniture. Some individuals burn wood to heat their homes. Trees are a renewable resource because they can be replanted.
Arbor Day is an annual holiday dedicated to celebrating trees. The name originates from the Latin word for tree—arbor. Every Arbor Day, people commemorate the occasion by planting and caring for trees.
Arbor Day was established in Nebraska. J. Sterling Morton wanted to inspire individuals and civic groups to plant trees. When he was the secretary for the Nebraska Territory, he proposed a holiday dedicated to tree planting. The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872. Approximately one million trees were planted across Nebraska on that day. Today, Morton is recognized as the Father of Arbor Day.
Morton’s idea spread, and people in other states began celebrating Arbor Day. President Richard Nixon proclaimed Arbor Day as a national holiday in 1972. Nationally, Arbor Day is observed on the last Friday in April. However, many states celebrate Arbor Day on different dates. Since weather conditions vary in each state, celebrations are held based on the optimal time for tree planting. This map displays the dates when each state celebrates Arbor Day.
Planting trees is just as significant today as it was during Morton’s time. In many parts of the world, trees and forests are being cut down. Some are harvested for timber, while others are cleared for agriculture or construction purposes. When all the trees in an area are removed at once, this is known as “clear cutting.” Occasionally, new trees are planted, which scientists refer to as reforestation.
Deforestation occurs when trees are clear-cut without being replanted. This can have detrimental effects on the environment. The soil erodes when the roots no longer hold it in place. Animals that have lost their habitat may become extinct. The increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere raises the Earth’s temperature.
Fortunately, Arbor Day brings attention to the importance of planting trees. It also encourages people to think about the future. When trees are planted, it takes many years for them to mature. Therefore, a tree planted today will provide shade, purify the air, and offer animal habitats for future generations.
