Fitz Gerald wrote about horse racing in the New York area. It is believed that he adopted the term “the Big Apple” from jockeys and trainers. They referred to New York City as “the Big Apple” because the horse races held there were some of the most significant in the country.
Other writers eventually caught on to Fitz Gerald’s use of the Big Apple nickname. Many began to use it in various contexts unrelated to horse racing. Over time, the nickname became synonymous with New York City in general. “The Big Apple” even became the subject of a popular song and dance in the 1930s.
After a period of decline, the nickname experienced a resurgence in the 1970s. This was when the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau incorporated the nickname into its marketing campaigns. Charles Gillett, the leader of the Bureau, believed that the nickname would improve the city’s reputation. During that time, many people perceived New York City as a dark and dangerous place. Referring to it as “the Big Apple” made it sound more cheerful.
